Independent Living Day

We are Looking for Volunteers on April 27, 2024!

In 2023, members of our community volunteered their time to help residents at Nunnawauk Meadows with spring projects. We are grateful to our volunteers and relationship with Nunnawauk Meadows for allowing us to continue this event year after year.

In collaboration with Nunnawauk Meadows, NYFS will provide volunteers to help residents with spring projects. Independent Living Day is a community wide effort to assist seniors, veterans and disabled residents to continue to live safely and independently in their homes.

Nunnawauk Meadows is located at:
3 Nunnawauk Road
Newtown, CT 06470
Projects ONLY completed at Nunnawauk Meadows

Schedule:
  • 8:00 AM: Volunteer check-in
    • A light breakfast will be provided. Residents are welcome to attend!
  • 9:00 AM: Volunteers start projects
    • Volunteers will spend an average of 20 minutes at each apartment.
  • 12:00 PM: Volunteers end projects

As part of NYFS’ continuum of care, Independent Living Day gives seniors an increased chance of living longer, healthier and more productive lives by receiving assistance with basic home upkeep, FREE of charge. In particular, this event focuses on providing:

  • Spreading Mulch
  • Planting Flowers
  • Raking Leaves
  • Organizing Closets & Cabinets
    • Cleaning Patios & Porches
    • Cleaning Patio Furniture
    • Washing Windows
    • Cleaning Refrigerators
    • Discarding Expired Food & Newspapers
    • And other Household Chores!
Volunteer Your Time!

Many senior citizens in Newtown face increased costs of living without the ability to make additional money. In order to live independently, they need assistance from their community. NYFS will be looking for volunteers for Independent Living Day.
